To My Children

Sat Dec 20, 2008, 6:01 PM
It is said that there is no time like the time when you were young. The innocence and beauty of childhood embraced by simplicity and enchantment. Where boundaries do not apply, borders cannot keep you out. There is no such thing as race, except for the one you win in gym class. Untainted by stereotypes, and unclouded by judgement. A clean slate. Where the world is still magical, and full of possibilities. Nothing holding you back, and the word 'impossible' does not exist. Where playing hard and scraped knees is the biggest of your problems. Such a simple place and time. Such memories should be cherished always, and never forgotten. And while we mold and shape our children, teach them patiently morals and values, the biggest lesson we could ever learn is from them.

Forget about famine and disease. Forget about the guy who cut you off driving home, or the waiter who got your order wrong. Forget about those new shoes or that BMW you can't afford. Remember the feel of the Earth between your fingers, playing in the sand, building a mud castle. Climbing a tree or the next biggest hill. Remember what it felt like to run, the wind in your hair, laughter on your breath. Picking flowers, chasing a butterfly, catching a cricket. Smile at the world, remember that anything IS still possible, we just think it isn't. Remember the world is yours.

Mistakes are a part of being human. Appreciate your mistakes for what they are: precious life lessons that can only be learned the hard way. Unless it's a fatal mistake, which, at least, others can learn from.
